In the 16th century, European explorers together with Spanish and French explorers led by Sieur de La Salle came by the area. Memphis was founded by James Winchester, Andrew Jackson and John Overton in 1819 and the name was taken from the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile River. Memphis employment during that time was in the transportation sector due to its location which is above the Mississippi River. With the influx of African-American slaves, the city became a major slave market with majority of the slaves was forced to work in the cotton industry. Union forces took control of the city on June 6, 1862 and became the supply base of the Union throughout the war. Many famous musicians grew up around the Memphis area like Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Al Green, B.B. King, Isaac Hayes, W.C. Handy, Johnny Cash, Howlin’ Wolf, Booker T. Jones, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley.
